Well, first, they are very similar. Big head and soft covering. The Bass Mallet Head may have a little harder center, or slightly less thick fabric, and in that way mallet if is a quick way to create a big, warm sound.
Softer headed mallets are great for pulling classic reverberations from large gongs.
