The Sun Gong, what we at Gongs Unlimited call the Solar Flare Gong, is a less traditional Chinese Gong than some of the other styles. It’s a more recent design created by Chinese gong makers and is available to all gong sellers, so we felt compelled to put it in the Traditional section. It is basically a Wind Gong, but with concentric bands of lathed and unlathed circles. The unlathed parts control the crash and splash, less than a Wind Gong. The rings concentrate the tones and it does not open up sound-wise like a fully lathed gong.
Navigators since the days of yore have depended on the stars as a reliable source of light by which to guide their journeys. From the starting point of the shores of home to the bull's-eye of their destination, stars are where it's at for getting us where we need to go. And for those of us tethered to the earth by gravity there is no greater star than the Sun.
The Sun, via the solar flare, waves its light and heat in the air like it just don't care. The blue/purple perimeter of this image represents stars, every star a tiny sun.
Ignite the fireworks of your own uncharted territory with a 10" Solar Flare - and don't forget your shades...

The 18" Solar Flare Gong. Who wouldn't be pleased as millions of nuclear explosions going on creating heat and light like the Sun, with a new 18" Solar Flare Gong?
We know we would.
Apollo would be proud to have such a gong named after one of the things the Greeks deemed him in charge of - the SUN.
Of course despite the chariot, Apollo had a few other talents which he "Godded up" - prophecy, music, healing, etc.
But we call this the "Solar Flare Gong" because sound erupts out of this gong like the way a flare erupts out of the Sun.
Flare out with your own 18" Solar Flare Gong!

The circular shape of the earth echoes exactly the shape of a 22" Solar Flare Gong.
With charming insouciance and verifiable credentials like that, the 22" Solar Flare Gong politely makes the case for its own greatness.
By the way, that distinctive visual lathing we talked about? It does a pretty fair impersonation of a bull's-eye, meaning whether you are navigating the physical Seven Seas or the inner ocean of the mind's eye, the 22" Solar Flare has something to offer navigators of every stripe.

Yes, the 28" Solar Flare Gong can build to a crash, but the tone is less wild. The concentric rings of unlathed bronze hold down the crash.
You can also play it softly and keep the tone clear without the crash of a Wind. Like a solar flare, it can be a tone that flies out of the gong from a point and then is done.

"Listen to this great gong we have, the 32" Solar Flare Gong!" a voice sings from your phone.
It makes you tear up, the pure meditative beauty of the sound.
"Great, isn't it? I love the deep resonating tone, and delayed splash. And I know you can't see it, but this gong is gorgeous, with distinct lathing. You're going to love this thing. Incredible, deep, shimmery, expressive, healing! They are words I say to describe it, but it is not the actual sound!"
"How did you know I wanted this?" you ask. "And, uh, how did you get my number?"
"The Universe! I call out to help people and the Universe sends me to you!" Andrew says. "Don't ask me how it works! I am not in charge. Have a good one!"

The 36" Solar Flare Gong holds layer upon layer of sound in its concentric rings. Like a Wind Gong, the Solar Flare Gong has no rim. Sound flies out of this baby--flies, bounces and shimmers in a surprisingly controlled fashion.
For those little black rings accentuating those bronze curves are not just for fashion, but to keep the sound waves from crashing too hard, keeping everything in perfect grace.
