Sirius, the Dog Star, is the brightest star in the night sky, and a prominent part of the constellation Canis Major. In Greek and Roman religious tradition, Sirius is a god that intensifies the sun's power, helping bring warmth to the summertime. The word "sirius" is thought to have meant "to sparkle." Sirius B is the second part of the binary star system we know as the Dog Star. It is smaller and dimmer than Sirius A, but its proximity makes the two appear as one.
