The 8” Vietnamese Pham Tuan Gong

How could we not name a Vietnamese Gong after the first Vietnamese person in Space?

In 1979, Vietnam selected Tuân to represent the reunified country in the Soviet Union’s Intercosmos program. That was Intercosmos, people! Not the Soviet's Intercourse program. That happened in various seedy Moscow hotels.

So in 1980, Tuân went into space on the Soyuz 37 with cosmonaut Viktor Gorbatko for about eight days, including six days on the Salyut 6 space station.

Pham Tuân! You are awesome for your courageous nature!

Of course, the Vietnamese David Bowie sang a similar song to the English Bowie’s hit, Major Tom, for his nation’s Cosmonaut, entitled Major Tuan.

Enjoy an excerpt here:

Blast-off!

Major Tom meets Major Tuan - David Bowie style! Enjoy an excerpt here:

This is Ground Control to Major Tuan
You’ve really made the grade
And the papers want to know whose Ao Dai you wear
Now it’s time to leave the capsule if you dare

“This is Major Tuan to Ground Control
I’m stepping through the door
And I’m floating in a most peculiar way
And the sao look very different today

For here
Am I sitting in a tin can
Far above the world
Trái Dất is blue
And there’s nothing I can do

Though I’m past one hundred thousand kilometers
I’m feeling very still
And I think my spaceship knows which way to go
Tell my vợ I love her very much (she knows!)
Ground Control to Major Tuan
Your circuit’s dead, there’s something wrong
Can you hear me, Major Tuan?
Can you hear me, Major Tuan?
Can you hear me, Major Tuan?
Can you hear....

Am I floating round my tin can
Far above Mặt Trăng
Trái Dất is blue is blue
And there’s nothing I can do.
