Introduction
A Family Legacy, Cast in Bronze
The history of Paiste Gongs begins in 1901, founded as a music store in St. Petersburg, Russia by an Estonian musician named Michal Toomas Paiste. In 1917, he moved the store to his native Estonia, where his son Michail M. Paiste made cymbal and gong making the main focus of the business.
The family relocated the business to Poland during WWII, weathering supply shortages and international tensions. Toward the end of the war, they left Poland for Northern Germany, restarting the business amid the post-war economic recovery and thriving through the '50s.
In 1957, Michal M. sent his sons, Robert and Toomas, to Switzerland to establish a new base for the company. Through the '50s and '60s, Robert developed Formula 602 — their proprietary blend of 80% copper and 20% tin — earning international recognition for the brand.
In 1981, the family established Paiste America in California, gaining a foothold in the world's largest instrument market. In 2003, Toomas's son Erik took over full responsibility for the family business.

Sizing
Choosing the Right Size
Smaller gongs have a higher pitch and crash faster than larger gongs. The larger the gong, the heavier it is — and the heavier it is, the deeper and more complex its voice becomes.
We recommend starting at 26" for sound bath meditation or sound therapy healing. Anything smaller tends to crash too quickly and lacks the depth people associate with meditation. Playing in a larger space? Consider something in the 32" range. If you already own multiple larger gongs, a smaller one can help fill out the sonic space.

Paiste Gongs vs. Chinese Gongs
Paiste Gongs are made of nickel silver, an alloy of zinc, copper, and nickel. Chinese Gongs are bronze — a mix of copper and tin.

Finishing Touch
Recommended Mallets
The right mallet depends on the size of your gong — a larger gong calls for a larger mallet, and vice versa. A softer mallet brings out more harmonics and overtones; a harder mallet focuses more on the fundamental tone.
Paiste recommends their M2 mallet for 20" gongs, their M5 for 26" to 30" gongs, and their M6 for 32" to 36" gongs.
Ollihess Mallets are great for Paiste Gongs. Their smaller mallets, the M174 and S186, are good for smaller gongs in the 20" to 26" range. The L355 is better for 28" to 32" gongs, and their L460 for 34" and larger gongs.
Dragonfly Percussion Mallets are great for bringing a mix of sounds to any gong.
